The warm up exercise will familiarise you with the process and check that your paper can withstand scrubbing under the water, so ensure that you use the paper and ink you intend to use in the final project.

For the warm up exercise of the rainbow you will need:

  • a small piece (approx 20x15cm) of NOT/Cold press watercolour paper, a minimum of 140lb/325gsm

  • black waterproof Indian ink

  • gouache - white, red, orange, yellow, blue, violet. This must NOT be acrylic gouache

  • if you do not have these colours, please improvise or tint your white gouache with watercolour

  • pencil, eraser 

  • medium round brush


For the main project you will need:

  • a piece of watercolour paper approx 40x50cm NOT/Cold press watercolour paper, a minimum of 140lb/325gsm

  • black waterproof Indian ink

  • gouache - cerulean blue, yellow, yellow ochre, burnt Sienna, raw Umber, Prussian blue, white. This must NOT be acrylic gouache

  • if you do not have these colours, please improvise or tint your white gouache with watercolour

  • pencil, eraser 

  • medium and small round brush

  • 0.5mm fine liner pen

  • watercolour paints - cerulean blue, yellow, yellow ochre, burnt Sienna, raw Umber, Prussian blue, white
